Artist's Statement The changing light of day and the moods it creates are the foundation of my paintings. Each piece usually begins with a simple sketch and an underpainting, followed by the careful application of color with an emphasis on value, temperature, and harmony. For me, painting is more than representation—it is a synthesis of my personal response to the subjects that inspire me. My interest in art grew in college while studying biology, where I found myself sketching many of the animals in my textbooks and from visiting art galleries and museums. Like most children, I enjoyed the chance to draw and paint in school, but much of my early life was devoted to sports and spending time outdoors. After two years in a Liberal Arts program that included only one art class, I enlisted in the Army and spent the next two and a half years in the beautiful country of Italy. The landscapes, architecture, and atmosphere left a lasting impression on me that remained long after I returned home. Later that year, I attended the State University of New York at Geneseo, where I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, followed by a Master’s degree in Secondary Education. For the next 35 years, I worked as an educator while teaching myself how to paint whenever time allowed. I often incorporated art into my science lessons, using drawing and visual concepts to help students better understand the material. After retiring, my passion for art was fully rekindled. Since then, I have devoted myself to painting full time, both in the studio and outdoors, continually inspired by the beauty, light, and atmosphere of the world around me. Currently, I am a member of the American Pastel Society, National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society, Adirondack Pastel Society, Yates County Art Center, Railroad Street Artworks, and a Signature Member of the Rochester Art Club.
